  • Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) can grow up to six feet tall and is characterized by its soft, fuzzy leaves and tall, yellow flowers.

Mullein has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly as a respiratory remedy. It has expectorant, demulcent, and soothing properties that can help to ease coughs and congestion. The leaves are rich in mucilage, a sticky substance that has a soothing effect on inflamed or irritated tissues. This makes mullein useful for a wide range of respiratory issues, including bronchitis, asthma, and even tuberculosis. The flowers are commonly used as a natural remedy for ear infections, as the infused oil of the flowers have antimicrobial properties that can help to fight off infections.

In addition to its medicinal properties, mullein is also used in various other applications. The dried leaves are often smoked or made into tea for its calming effects on the respiratory system. The leaves can be boiled in water to create a yellow-green dye, while the flowers produce a yellow dye. The large leaves can also be used as a natural insect repellent. Simply crush the leaves and rub them on your skin or clothing to help repel mosquitoes, flies, and other insects.

This mullein was grown and harvested from my garden.
